Report: Chelsea owners make transfer U-turn in the wake of Arsenal loss

Chelsea didn’t have plans to make any signings during the January transfer window, but things could be about to change.

The Blues’ loss to Arsenal highlighted a number of issues that Liam Rosenior currently faces at Chelsea, despite there only being a one-goal deficit currently.

Chelsea’s defence was a big concern, with Jamie Redknapp highlighting the need for a centre-back after the game.

Levi Colwill’s injury certainly hasn’t helped at Stamford Bridge. He’s missed 52 games and is likely to be out until the summer, so there’s certainly room.

Now, Liam Rosenior had asked Chelsea to sign Valentin Barco, but it was believed that the club would be more reactive to opportunities, opposed to actively looking.

But that could all be about the change.

QUESTION: Who is out there that fits the description for Chelsea?👀

Chelsea to accelerate plans to sign a central defender

A central defender was on the cards for the summer transfer window, but now the Chelsea owners have brought those plans forward after the loss to Arsenal.

According to Matt Law, these plans aim to help Rosenior cope with the club’s busy fixture list and implement his style of play.

The club are even prepared to carry an extra body for the remaining four months of the season if they can find the right defender this month.

But, it won’t be easy to land a player with experience with how tough January generally is.

How would you feel about Nathan Ake returning to Chelsea? 🤔

Which central defenders do Chelsea admire?

Well, there have been transfer links between Chelsea and Jeremy Jacquet, and Matt Law states that he is a player that the Blues are still fond of.

He is a 20-year-old French centre-back currently playing for Rennes in Ligue 1. However, having emerged as one of the most highly sought-after young defenders in Europe, the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Real Madrid also want to secure his services.

But, given that Chelsea already have Mamadou Sarr to come back in the summer and Levi Colwill, it would make more sense to find an experienced defender.

The current options of Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashille, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Josh Acheampong all lack the kind of leadership qualities that were seen with Thiago Silva.
