Man United ignored Ruben Amorim’s request to sign a particular Premier League striker.
Both forwards haven’t struggled to acclimatise to life at Old Trafford, which is why the ‘proven experience’ mould of player seems to be the way forward. It is unclear whether United will make any signings in the January transfer window to help Michael Carrick; If they don’t, they’ll likely spend big in the summer.
Ruben Amorim was sacked because of disagreements with the Director of Football and the higher-ups at United. It has now been revealed that one of those disagreements was over transfer strategy heading into January.
Amorim wanted United to sign Mateta
It is understood that the former United boss asked the club to sign an experienced Premier League striker in January, as he wanted someone to complement Benjamin Sesko at the striker position.
According to Sky Sports, Amorim was ignored when he told the club that he wanted to sign Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, as United had already spent a significant amount on Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko in the summer transfer window.
Mateta has been one of the most clinical strikers in the league over the past couple of years. The French international has scored eight goals this season so far, and managed to net 14 league goals last season.
He is a strong, fast target man and is somewhat of an old-fashioned number nine, which is something United have lacked for the past few years. He is very well regarded amongst Premier League players, as Arsenal star William Saliba was quoted by Tribuna earlier in the season, calling him “tough”. The French centre-back said: “He’s a very tough forward to play against.
“He’s strong, he’s fast… If Crystal Palace have been so good for the past two years, it’s thanks to him.”
Could Man United sign a striker in January?
As the club decided to ignore Amorim with Mateta, is there a chance they could sign a striker in the January window to help Carrick lead the team to Champions League football?
The Red Devils have been linked with Dusan Vlahovic at Juventus, with the Serbian’s contract due to expire at the end of the season. It means he could be available on the cheap, as Juventus would like to cash in on him before he leaves as a free agent in the summer.
However, the more likely outcome is that Man United won’t sign a striker, and they’ll stick with Joshua Zirkzee behind Sesko. The Dutchman was linked to Roma, but the Italian club have signed Donyel Malen from Aston Villa, meaning Zirkzee will probably stay at Old Trafford.
