Key reason revealed behind Jonathan Kuminga trade interest by Lakers

Lakers top executive Rob Pelinka is reportedly a "fan" of Kuminga amid trade rumors.

The Los Angeles Lakers have suddenly emerged out of nowhere as an interested team for Jonathan Kuminga.

Apparently, it was a no-brainer given that Rob Pelinka sees him as an ideal fit and complementary piece to build around Luka Doncic.

“Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka is a fan of Kuminga’s, sources say, and likes the idea of him as an athletic wing on a Luka Dončić-led team," wrote Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. "The Warriors have been aware of the Lakers’ likeness for Kuminga, though it’s unclear how likely an in-season move between the two teams is.”

As he is now finally trade eligible upon reaching the Jan. 15 deadline, reports emerged that Kuminga demanded to be out by the Warriors. The young forward faced DNPs all season long, and it is widely believed that his relationship with the franchise and Steve Kerr is already beyond repair

Kuminga only appeared in 18 games this season, averaging 11.8 points in a career-worst 43.1 percent shooting and 6.2 rebounds. Many believe that the Dubs completely restricted his growth and potential.

As for the Lakers, their search continues for a needed wing presence before the Feb. 5 trade deadline to strengthen their defensive reputation.

It remains to be seen if the Lakers can pull a Kuminga deal with the Warriors. Knowing that both teams are significant competitors in the Western Conference, the Dubs may look for other partner teams as a trade partner for Kuminga.
