He is the Premier League's newest manager - and, in his playing days, he was also a cup-final heartbreaker against Carlisle United.

Liam Rosenior is the new boss at Chelsea having joined the Stamford Bridge club from Strasbourg last week as successor to Enzo Maresca.

And the 41-year-old's name will be further familiar to Carlisle fans from Rosenior's exploits against the Blues some 23 years ago.

In the early stages of his playing career, Rosenior was a substitute for Bristol City in 2003's LDV Vans Trophy final against Roddy Collins' United.

And the then 19-year-old made his mark by turning home the Robins' clinching second goal in the closing stages at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium _(watch below)._

He had also played a key part in the opener scored by City's ex-Carlisle striker Lee Peacock, who converted the rebound after United keeper Matty Glennon had saved a Rosenior shot.

Rosenior's goal served to end United's hopes of a fightback, Collins' fourth-tier side having defied their league struggles to reach the 2002/03 final against City from the league above, in front of 50,913 fans.

The goal from the future Chelsea boss was only the third strike of Rosenior's first-team career and came in just his 23rd professional appearance.

Rosenior, who won England Under-21 caps, went on to play for Fulham, Torquay United, Reading, Ipswich Town, Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion, while in management he has been in charge of Hull and Strasbourg before being appointed at Chelsea, where he has overseen two games so far, including Wednesday night's 3-2 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Arsenal.
