Liverpool star Mohamed Salah's wait to win an AFCON title with Egypt goes on following a 1-0 loss to Senegal
Mohamed Salah suffered more African Cup of Nations heartbreak on Wednesday night as Egypt were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in the semi-final.
Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane scored the only goal of the game with 78 minutes on the clock. The West African nation dominated possession and limited Egypt to just one shot on target.
For Salah, it is another AFCON without winning the continental African crown. The Liverpool legend has been a hugely-influential member of the Egyptian national team but he will now be preparing for a return to Merseyside.
Will Mo Salah play for Liverpool this weekend against Burnley?
After a 4-1 win over Barnsley at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday, Liverpool are at home once again as they host Burnley in a Premier League encounter.
Salah scored a late, late penalty at Turf Moor back in August as Liverpool claimed a 1-0 win over the Clarets. However, despite Egypt getting knocked out of AFCON, Salah still has one more game to play.
There is a third place play-off that will take place at 4pm on Saturday, which means that game will be happening as Liverpool are in action at Anfield. It will be Salah’s final game of the tournament which means he is set to return ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Marseille in France.
Liverpool then take on Bournemouth away from home on January 24 before ending the month with home games against Qarabag and Newcastle United.
Will Mo Salah start again for Liverpool?
Before heading to AFCON, Salah delivered a bombshell interview after a 3-3 draw with Leeds United as he expressed frustration over not starting games.
He claimed he no longer had a relationship with manager Arne Slot but the Dutchman has since said that they have moved on from Salah’s public outburst.
"I said last week, actions speak louder than words," Slot said after Salah left for AFCON.
"We moved on. He was in the squad and was the first substitution I made [against Brighton]. Now he's got AFCON and will play some big games so it's only fair that all focus is on them [Egypt].”
Salah is unlikely to put right in the starting line-up, having been dropped from the XI before heading to AFCON.
