Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea transfer wish could finally be granted, but to his successor.

The Chelsea board are said to be willing to give Liam Rosenior something they were not willing to give Enzo Maresca. The Blues parted ways with Maresca after their relationship splintered and ultimately ruptured, with results not a central part of the final decision.

The decision was actually agreed upon by both parties, with Maresca approaching Chelsea and asking to leave, and given their strained relationship, the Blues were happy to part ways.

The issues date back to the summer when Maresca asked Chelsea to sign a new centre-back after Levi Colwill was ruled out for much of - if not all of - the season with a serious knee injury. Maresca initially went public in saying a new centre-back was required, and after the board informed him that one would not be signed, he had to tell fans that he would be looking within for solutions.

That decision arguably cost Chelsea, who have left plenty to be desired defensively, and it’s a decision that cost the Blues a head coach. But all that is now in the past, and Chelsea must concentrate on moving forward with Rosenior.

Four points off the top four, the Blues know they have little room for error going forward, and it seems they are now willing to listen to Maresca, although that will only benefit his successor Rosenior.

Speaking on his YouTube show, Fabrizio Romano said: “Let’s see what happens with centre-backs because there are conversations Chelsea are having with Liam Rosenior over the possibility of adding a centre-back in (the) January window. It’s something Maresca wanted in the summer but Chelsea stuck with the squad they have.

“Let’s see now what they decide to do in the final two weeks because with internal discussions, the possibility of signing a centre-back now, in January, has been assessed. Let’s see if Chelsea find the right opportunity on the market to add one more centre-back to their squad.”

The issue for Chelsea is that the January window is a tough window to do business in, and few clubs are willing to sell starter-calibre centre-backs, and even fewer for a good price.

Impact on Acheampong

There has been some speculation that a new defensive arrival will mean Acheampong has to go out on loan, but that is not the case, according to Romano.

“It is not going to mean anything to Josh Acheampong because they still trust Josh and they don’t want to sell him,” he added. “Despite all the rumours we are going to here, his situation is absolutely quiet.”
