Not Guehi: Liverpool handed boost to sign Champions League defender as club 'close' to deal

Liverpool are among the teams who have been linked with Nico Schlotterbeck.

Liverpool have handed a potential boost should they look to pursue the signing of Nico Schlotterbeck.

The centre-back’s Borussia Dortmund contract is ticking down and he is still to commit his future. Expiring in 2027, BVB have offered Schlotterbeck fresh terms but he continues to stall. As a result, Dortmund may look to cash in on the Germany international rather than risk losing him on a free in 18 months’ time.

Schlotterbeck has been linked with several top European clubs. Liverpool are one outfit who have been named as potential suitors, along with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, according to German newspaper BILD, Bayern are no longer in the race for Schlotrerbeck. The Bundesliga champions are reportedly close to tying Dayot Upamecano down to fresh terms. Upamecano’s current deal comes to a close at the end of the season.

In addition, it is said that Min-Jae Kim is happy to stay at the club. Kim has mainly been a substitute this season but he’s been recovering from injury and wants to fight for his place. If the South Korea international does pursue a departure from the Allianz Arena then Bayern could turn their attention to Schlotterbeck.

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted that the club are still trying to persuade Schlotterbeck to remain at Signal Iduna Park. He said: “I think it would be really difficult to come up with new arguments in every conversation,” Kehl said via BILD. “Of course, we try to convince him – with all the power this club has, and I believe also with the appreciation the boy feels, with the goals we want to achieve together. We want to show him a perspective that makes sense for him. We don't sit down together every day. These kinds of topics need time to mature.

"He has naturally given this break some thought, and we spoke about it beforehand. We will continue to talk. But otherwise, to be honest, there's no new information at the moment. It's clear that we want to continue. But no decision has been made yet."
