James Pearce shares what his sources have now told him about Liverpool making January signings

Over two weeks of the 2026 January transfer window have passed, and Liverpool are yet to make a senior signing.

Arne Slot has some key injury issues right now, with the likes of Conor Bradley and Alexander Isak sidelined for prolonged periods.

On top of that, Liverpool fans aren’t happy with the manager right now amid a poor run of performances.

The title race is already over for the Reds, but supporters would still no doubt love to see some new additions made in January.

There has been a suggestion that Liverpool will be quiet in January, but potential deals still can’t be ruled out.

Liverpool could still sign players in January

Speaking on the Walk On podcast this week, journalist James Pearce commented on winter transfers.

When doing so, he said that if the right opportunity comes along, Liverpool will act.

He stated: “Well, I certainly, I don’t think it’s as kind of cut and dry as they won’t do business this month. I think it’s more from what I’ve been told. It’s like, if the right opportunity comes up, they’ll move for it.

“But at the minute, they don’t see the right opportunity. And obviously, if they had done, they would have moved by now because we’re already halfway through the January window.

“So yeah, I think we know from, certainly from Michael Edwards’ reign as sporting director, that Liverpool won’t go down the route of short-term fixes.”

The right opportunity is there for Liverpool

While fans should be happy to see there is still some hope of a deal being done this month, claims that the club haven’t found the right opportunity yet are a bit odd.

If there is one position that Liverpool need to strengthen this month, it is centre-back. There is a serious lack of depth there, and Joe Gomez, the only back-up, is now needed to cover for Conor Bradley on the right.

So, why haven’t Liverpool gone early and made a fresh move for Marc Guehi amid Manchester City’s interest?

Crystal Palace want upwards of £35m to sell the player this month, ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

That’s a similar sum to what Liverpool offered for Guehi last year, so why not just use that money to complete the deal now?
