Man City Set To Offer £3.5M A Year Contract To Guehi Alternative Who Is Also A Target For Liverpool - Report

Man City have entered the race to sign Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez, according to reports in the Ecuadorian media.

Bolavip.com claims that manager Pep Guardiola was already a fan of the 21-year-old before the club’s defensive injury crisis that has seen both Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias sidelined.

With the Cityzens now looking for potential reinforcements in the transfer market, it is believed that they are considering a move for Ordonez.

Bolavip say that personal terms won’t be an issue, with Guardiola’s team willing to offer a salary between €3m (£2.6m) and €4m (£3.5m) a year, which works out at less than £70,000 a week.

Ordonez has been tracked by other Premier League clubs

The Ecuadorian international was heavily linked with Liverpool earlier this month, while Chelsea and Serie A side Inter Milan are also said to be keeping tabs on him.

Ordonez’s asking price has been set at around €40m (£35m), which means he would cost roughly the same amount as Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

However, it should be pointed out that Ordonez has three and a half years left on his contract, unlike Guehi, who has less than six months remaining. In addition, the England international’s wage demands are believed to be in the £200,000 a week range, which is substantially more than what Ordonez is reportedly asking for.

What do Man City fans need to know about the defender?

Ordonez came through the academy of Independiente del Valle before joining Club Brugge for just under €4m in August 2022.

The centre-half initially played for the Belgian team’s reserves Club NXT in the lower leagues before establishing himself in the senior setup.

Ordonez has now played over 100 times for Club Brugge, having helped them win the Belgian Cup and reach the last 16 of the Champions League last season.
