Andy Robertson revealed on Thursday that he is in active discussions with Liverpool over a new contract but admitted he faces a “difficult question” about his future at Anfield, with playing time emerging as the major factor in his decision-making process.

The Scotland captain spoke candidly on Thursday about his contractual situation, confirming that talks with the club hierarchy are ongoing despite his current deal entering its final five months.

Robertson, who was appointed Liverpool vice-captain following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s summer departure to Real Madrid, acknowledged that conversations have taken place with the club’s senior management but insisted those discussions would remain private.

“We’ve had chats now which will remain private. We’ll see what happens,” Robertson told media on Thursday. “It’s a difficult question to answer [if he wants to stay]. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I’ll sit down with my family and decide”.

The 31-year-old left-back has been at Liverpool since July 2017, when he arrived from Hull City for what has proven to be a bargain fee of £8 million.

Now Arne Slot has responded to the comments, and has hailed Robertson for his maturity in handling the issue – but otherwise kept contract news close to his chest:

“I think I had to give him a big compliment over what he said, very mature and I understood everything he said,” Arne Slot said.

“Every player should have the same feeling who doesn’t start every game but I am really happy to hear he finds joy in his current position and he understands how important he is and has been for this club.”

He hasn’t played as much as he would have hoped but what he said in the media was a big compliment.”
