New comments from Arne Slot suggest 'rumour' Gary Lineker heard about Liverpool manager isn't true - opinion

Arne Slot spoke about transfers ahead of Liverpool taking on Burnley in a Premier League meeting this weekend.

The Reds are yet to complete a senior signing in the 2026 January transfer window.

Former target Antoine Semenyo has now moved to Manchester City, while the Sky Blues also have an interest in Marc Guehi.

It has been suggested Liverpool want to sign Guehi in the summer when he is a free agent, rather than in the current window.

What does Arne Slot need to do vs Burnley to keep Liverpool fans off his back?

But if that does transpire, it will leave Arne Slot with just three fit centre-backs, including Joe Gomez, who is injury-prone and now needed as right-back cover for Conor Bradley.

Furthermore, the noise coming out of Anfield this month is that Liverpool will have a quiet January.

Given the Reds’ decline in 2025/26 and the lack of depth in certain key positions, making no additions this winter is probably not ideal.

Gary Lineker on Arne Slot and Richard Hughes falling out

In turn, it was perhaps not too surprising when Gary Lineker recently spoke about some potential tension between Slot and Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director.

He said last week: “Very strong rumours around Liverpool at the moment.

“There’s a bit of a fallout between Arne Slot and I think it’s Richard Hughes running the operations there.

“People want their say on team matters and et cetera.”

However, it doesn’t appear as though that is the case, at least based on what Slot has said in his pre-Burnley press conference on Friday.

Arne Slot says Liverpool ‘aligned’ on transfers

As mentioned, Bradley is now out for the remainder of the season, leaving Liverpool short of natural right-back options.

There have been reports that a new right-back could be signed this month, with Slot asked about potential replacements on Friday.

Interestingly, though he remained coy on whether or not a full-back could be brought in, he was quick to stress that everyone at the club is aligned when it comes to transfers.

As per BBC Sport: “Arne Slot says ‘everyone at the club are aligned’ with regard to transfers when asked if the club will dip into the market following the injury to Conor Bradley.

“He adds that this ‘doesn’t mean the club will act but everyone is aligned’.”

If the Dutchman had indeed fallen out with Hughes, as the rumour suggested, it’s unlikely he would have made such claims this week.

We have already seen managers like Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca express their displeasure at their then-team’s hierarchy recently, but Slot seemingly doesn’t feel the need to do so, even if Liverpool are yet to make a senior signing this month.
