Chesterfield are advancing in their interest of signing Manchester City‘s Will Dickson on a permanent basis.
The Premier League youngster has spent the first half of the season on loan at the Spireites, playing 18 times and scoring once. While it has been a struggle for minutes with just two starts in League Two, it seems Paul Cook’s side are impressed with the 21-year-old.
Permanent Move Touted
According to the Derbyshire Times, Chesterfield are progressing in talks with Manchester City over signing Dickson permanently after his initial loan deal was believed to have expired last week.
The former Motherwell loanee is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2027, and his efforts have reportedly impressed the coaching staff at Chesterfield, which has opened the door for them to sign the striker permanently.
Interest had stemmed from the 8th of January, with Dickson’s situation unclear after no announcement was made regarding the end of his loan deal, which should have ended three days prior.
With fellow loanee striker Ronan Darcy expected to leave to return to Wigan Athletic, space for a new attacking player has been created in the Spireites starting eleven behind Lee Bonis and Will Grigg.
Town Build For Second Half
The January window has been a good one so far for Chesterfield, with six signings through the door so far, as well as a slight clearout of players with the end of loan spells for Devan Tanton and Matt Dibley-Dias.
Paul Cook has built a strong mix of experience and promise, with striker Freddie Ladapo arriving, later joined by Sammy Braybrooke, who showed his ability at the League Two level while at Newport County.
Tom Pearce was the most recent man to move to the SMH Group Stadium, beating League One sides to his signature. Those signings highlight a real intent of promotion this season, something they can certainly reach being three points behind Walsall in third place.
Game Time Key
With his chances of breaking through Manchester City’s academy very slim, taking the leap now to join another side permanently is probably the best choice for Will Dickson to make.
A move to Chesterfield would see him head to a team looking to challenge for promotion over the next few seasons, and that have invested in him for the past six months.
While it has been a very tough spell in Derbyshire so far, the exit of Ronan Darcy will likely free up a lot of game time in Paul Cook’s plans, ideal for a player like Dickson to slot in to.
By no means the finished article yet, with some more time to mature, Dickson could be a great replacement for the ageing Will Grigg and a great support to Lee Bonis for the years to come as they push for a place in League One.
