Crystal Palace now face the prospect of losing one of their best players this month.
Crystal Palace now look as though they could lose star man Marc Guehi this month despite it looking as though the defender would leave in the summer. Guehi almost left last summer after he was granted permission to speak to Liverpool, only for the Eagles to pull the rug on the move due to failing to find an adequate replacement on time.
That left the defender unhappy, but to his credit, the England international got his head down and remained committed to Palace and their endeavours under Oliver Glasner.
It was then believed that Guehi would see out the season with Palace, leaving at the end of his contract this summer, but Manchester City have other ideas. Reports claim City are pushing to get a deal done this month, offering Palace the chance to earn some money now rather than allowing a prize asset to leave the club for nothing in the summer.
First, City needed to convince Guehi that it would be a good idea to leave this month, and it seems as though they may now have done that, leading to potential discussions with Palace themselves.
That will be a blow to Liverpool, who are said to have been hoping for a summer move for Guehi.
The deal could now come down to whether City can agree a deal with Palace, and as far as Palace are concerned, it may again come down to whether they can find a replacement. The Eagles can’t afford to go into the second half - or just under - of the season without their best defender and without replacing him.
The issue is that January is an expensive month to do transfer business, and centre-backs who are ready to compete and start in the Premier League are not all that easy to come by. This is going to be a potentially season-defining decision for Palace, but they must also look after their financial interests, which is what could make a deal likely.
