The Marc Guehi transfer saga has turned into the gift that keeps on giving – in all the wrong ways. For Liverpool fans still scarred by last summer’s deadline‑day collapse, the idea of Manchester City now swooping in for a centre‑back the club has tracked for so long has stirred very negative emotions to say the least.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have made an advanced move for Marc Guehi in the last hours.
The sudden acceleration from Pep Guardiola’s side is driven by injuries to Rúben Dias, John Stones and Joško Gvardiol, and it looks like the Cityzens want to test Palace’s resolve this January. While Guehi is reportedly keen on a summer move, the allure of working with the Spanish manager and such a talented squad may sway the England international to make the winter switch instead.
Last August, the 25-year-old was on the brink of becoming a Liverpool player after the club agreed a £35 million fee with Crystal Palace, including an additional £5 million in add-ons. Guehi had already commenced a medical examination in London and was poised to sign his contract at Liverpool’s headquarters before the deal spectacularly collapsed at the eleventh hour.
The collapsed deal may make Guehi hesitant to wait until the summer and instead take the chance to join an elite club while he has it.
Taking to X, the Italian transfer guru reported:
“Manchester City advance on Marc Guehi deal as big approach has been made in the last 12h. Manchester City presented important proposal to Guehi in terms of contract, eventually ready to proceed also with Crystal Palace. Deal now closer with Man City.”
Some reports even suggest City are prepared to bridge the gap in Guehi’s personal terms to compensate for the signing‑on bonus he would sacrifice by moving before his contract expires. Not good news for Liverpool.
