With Andy Robertson providing a candid update on his contract talks with Liverpool, Arne Slot praised the left-back’s interview as “very mature.”
Robertson spoke to reporters this week and explained that, while talks are ongoing and he would like to stay at Liverpool, his future was not certain.
“I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that,” he said.
Liverpool’s vice-captain also spoke proudly of his role as a leader within the squad and acknowledged that while he is not happy on the bench, it is “nothing I’ve been surprised by.”
Speaking in his pre-Burnley press conference, Slot responded: “I have to give him a big compliment about the things he said.
“Very mature and I could understand everything he was saying.
“I think every player should have the same feeling about his current position, and that is that he’s not starting every game.

“But I’m really happy that he also says that he finds joy in the position he’s in and that he also understands how important he’s been to this club for all these years and he definitely still also is in the position he’s in now.
“He did play quite a lot of games – not as much as he probably hoped.
“But the way he’s acting and also now his comments in the media is a big compliment and says a lot about him, how good he’s been for this club in the past eight-and-a-half years.”

Robertson came close to leaving Liverpool in the summer, with an offer on the table from Atletico Madrid, but he opted to stay following conversations with his family.
He knew heading into the new campaign that he would be contending for a place with £40 million signing Milos Kerkez, and the Hungarian has taken time to find his feet.
While the end of the season – and his current contract – seemed like a natural juncture for Robertson to leave Liverpool, there remains a strong chance that he re-signs.
“The relationship is good,” he said, with Liverpool clearly eager to tie their No. 26 down for an extended period.
“It’s not quite ‘what do they need to show me and what do I need to show them’ as we’ve shown each other more than enough respect over the last eight-and-a-half years, and we’ll see what comes.”
Should Liverpool do everything possible to tie Andy Robertson down to a new deal?

At 31, the Scotland captain remains a vital leader in Arne Slot‘s dressing room, yet he has been candid about his desire to play more regularly.
