Sixers guard with Filipino roots draws trade interest ahead of deadline

Several teams have checked on Jared McCain's availability ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, as injuries and VJ Edgecombe's breakout have reduced the second-year guard's role in Philadelphia.

Several teams have contacted the Philadelphia 76ers to gauge the potential availability of shooting guard Jared McCain as the Feb. 5 trade deadline approaches, according to Evan Sidery of Forbes.

After a strong rookie campaign, McCain has struggled to find consistency in his second year, largely due to injuries and the rapid emergence of VJ Edgecombe.

The 21-year-old guard, selected No. 16 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, averaged 15.3 points per game as a rookie but has seen his production drop to 6.3 points per contest in 2025–26. He is shooting 35.4% from the field while playing 17.3 minutes per game.

Meanwhile, Edgecombe, the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft, has quickly become a focal point for the team, posting 15.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in 35.8 minutes.

McCain's rookie season was cut short by a knee injury, limiting him to just 23 appearances.

Off the court, McCain previously shared details about his Filipino heritage, saying, "I'm probably like 10% Filipino, but that counts."

Though he was born in Sacramento, California, that connection could potentially make him eligible to represent Gilas Pilipinas in future FIBA competitions.

The Sixers are currently sitting at 22-17 and fifth in the Eastern Conference.
