The Clarets still haven’t tasted three points in the league since the end of October though, leaving them eight points adrift of safety down at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

They travel to Anfield to face a resurgent Liverpool side that are now unbeaten in their last 11.

Arne Slot’s men stretched that record with a relatively comfortable 4-1 win over League One side Barnsley in their cup encounter.

He’s overseen 13 games so far this season, dishing out 40 yellow cards and two reds.

Ten of those 13 games have come in the Premier League, one in a Champions League qualifier, another in the Carabao Cup and the other in League One.

He’s taken charge of one Liverpool game so far this season, their surprise 3-0 home defeat to Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest in November.

Madley also angered Liverpool boss Arne Slot last season during the Reds’ 3-3 draw with Newcastle United.

The Dutchman was seen exchanging words with the referee as they walked down the tunnel at half time.

In what was a televised game, Amazon Prime presenter Dan Walker claimed Slot went into the referee’s room at half-time – but that was later disputed.

What history does he have with Burnley?

This will be the first Burnley game he’s taken charge of since December 2024, when he oversaw the 2-1 away win at Norwich City.

He handed out four yellow cards on that occasion, three to Norwich and one to Burnley’s James Trafford as Scott Parker’s men came from behind to win.

Prior to that, he was the man in the middle for Burnley’s 4-1 Premier League win at Sheffield United in April 2024.

Who is on VAR duty?

Michael Salisbury, assisted by Dan Robathan.

Salisbury was briefly dropped from refereeing duties earlier in the season when he controversially disallowed Josh King’s goal for Fulham during their game at Chelsea.

PGMOL admitted after the game Salisbury had made a clear error.

Lee Betts and Marc Perry will run the line, while Adam Herczeg is fourth official.
