All the latest Fantasy Premier League injury news ahead of the Gameweek 22 deadline.
After a whole week off to rest and relax, Fantasy Premier League players will once again have to spend some time poring over their options before a big deadline – with all transfers needing to be in by 11:00 GMT on Saturday before Gameweek 22 gets underway with the Manchester Derby. As always, however, there are a host of injury issues to navigate.
Cole Palmer is perhaps the biggest FPL name with the dreaded yellow flag next to his name in the app, but there is also selection news on a range of players from Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi and Daniel Muñoz for players to chew over – so we’ve once again pulled together all of that latest news updates for you ahead of the deadline to make life a little easier.
Before we get underway, if you also want some advice on how to handle Antoine Semenyo after his move to Manchester City, or want some insight into how that transfer will impact Phil Foden and the rest of his colleagues at the Etihad, check out our resident FPL expert’s column on the subject by clicking here.
Chelsea’s Cole Palmer among key doubts heading into FPL Gameweek 22
Cole Palmer: Palmer was an unexpected absentee for Chelsea’s recent cup fixtures against Charlton and Arsenal and missed several days of training with what Liam Rosenior described as a “minor” thigh injury. Palmer returned to training in the second half of the week, however, and while still a minor doubt at the time of writing, he seems set to be involved in some capacity against Brentford. A late fitness test awaits.
Reece James, Malo Gusto, Liam Delap & Jamie Gittens: Not that Palmer is the only doubt at Stamford Bridge - quite a few players could miss the match against Brentford. James and Gusto are slight doubts but likely to blame after recent injuries, but Delap and Gittens have both been struck down by a virus and it’s unclear as to whether they’ll recover in time to be included. We’d assume not as it stands, as Rosenior told the media on Friday that they were both still at home.
Hugo Ekitiké: The Frenchman missed a couple of recent matches due to injury (much to the chagrin of a number of FPL players) but was back on the bench for the FA Cup win over Barnsley on Monday, played 30 minutes, scored, and is apparently good to go for Liverpool this weekend. Early indications are that he should be back in the starting line-up, with Arne Slot telling the press on Friday that everyone is ready to roll save for the long-term absentees like Alexander Isak.
Marc Guéhi: A pretty seismic press conference revealed that not only would Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner be leaving at the end of the season, but that Guéhi’s widely expected move to Manchester City was “in the final stages” - meaning that the centre-back would not be part of the squad to face Sunderland tomorrow. It’s not an injury, granted, but worth knowing all the same.
Daniel Muñoz: Elsewhere at Selhurst Park, right-back Muñoz is a popular asset in the FPL when he’s fit but hasn’t been involved for a little while now thanks to a bad knee injury. He’s been upgraded to an orange flag on the app after over a month out, but pending word for Oliver Glasner we don’t believe he’s very likely to play this weekend – another week or two may be required, even if he is getting close to a comeback.
Newcastle, Spurs & Man Utd injuries create selection headaches
Tino Livramento, Fabian Schär & Dan Burn: It’s a pretty bad week to have invested in Newcastle defenders. Livramento is out for around two months with a hamstring injury, while Schär will likely be out for even longer after undergoing ankle surgery. There’s better news for people who want to sign Burn, however – he is “improving,” according to Eddie Howe, and “getting closer” to a return. This weekend comes too soon, however.
Richarlison & Mohammed Kudus: This season really hasn’t gone well for Tottenham Hotspur, and they may be the unluckiest team in the league when it comes to injuries – Richarlison, still in a surprisingly large number of FPL teams, is now out for around seven weeks due to a hamstring issue. That injury follows hot on the heels of the news that Mohammed Kudus would be out until late March (at least) due to a quad injury. Ouch.
Matthijs de Ligt & Harry Maguire: Players often find ways to convince themselves to sign Manchester United defenders, but anyone keeping an eye on the comeback of De Ligt and Maguire with a view to a transfer should hold fire, and not only because they may not play. Maguire is almost certainly out for another couple of weeks, while De Ligt is a significant doubt despite making his return to training after a back injury.
Yankuba Minteh & Carlos Baleba: Inconsistent winger Minteh is set to return to the Brighton side this weekend, according to manager Fabian Hürzeler, while Baleba is back from AFCON and “in good shape” – anyone eyeing him as a cheap defensive contribution magnet for the back end of the season can at least start considering him once more.
Piero Hincapié: Mikel Arteta was exactly as helpful as usual in his Friday press conference, cryptically informing the media that he would “meet the medical staff and have the training session now to see if somebody is available for the weekend.” He didn’t say who, but we would assume it’s Hincapié following a recent thigh problem. Riccardo Calafiori is likely to be a couple of weeks away from a comeback.
