Liverpool have been tracking Nico Schlotterbeck for several months as Arne Slot targets defensive reinforcements, especially with ongoing uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Ibrahima Konaté and Marc Guehi landing up at Manchester City. The Reds are understood to have held encouraging discussions with the 26-year-old’s camp, following on from initial contact first reported back in October by DaveOCKOP.

Schlotterbeck is still hesitating over a new deal at Borussia Dortmund, with his current contract running until the summer of 2027. Despite BVB putting a significantly improved offer on the table worth around €8 million per season until 2030, the Germany international is thought to harbour doubts over the club’s ambitions and their capacity to consistently challenge for top honours.

That reluctance to commit has left Dortmund in a difficult situation: sell the defender in the summer or risk him running down his contract and walking away for free in 2027. Consequently, a departure in the next summer transfer window is looking increasingly plausible

Dortmund chiefs have launched a massive offensive to keep their star defender. The club is reportedly ready to make Schlotterbeck the highest-paid player in the squad, putting a contract offer on the table worth up to €14 million (£11.6m) per season including bonuses. This would double is current estimated earnings at Signal Iduna Park.

But currently, a contract extension for the German international has not been reached. And now yet more positive news has emerged regarding a potential deal.

Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Nico Schlotterbeck has significantly cooled, handing Liverpool a major boost in their quest to secure the Borussia Dortmund defender. According to journalist Christian Falk, the Bavarian giants now view Schlotterbeck as financially unviable if Dayot Upamecano commits to a new contract at the Allianz Arena, with the Frenchman’s current deal expiring this summer.

Falk confirmed Bayern won’t pursue Schlotterbeck “at the moment,” redirecting attention towards Premier League clubs who may capitalise on Munich’s hesitance. The journalist emphasised that Schlotterbeck wants to compete for major honours – something he believes is currently impossible at Dortmund—making a transfer increasingly likely.

Despite Schlotterbeck’s personal desire to join Bayern via his family roots.

Munich have effectively withdrawn from the race due to cost concerns. The 26-year-old Germany international currently earns £78,600 per week at Dortmund, though any potential suitor would likely need to offer significantly improved terms to prise him away from Signal Iduna Park.

With Marc Guehi now unvailable for the Reds, it remains to be seen if Liverpool switch attention to Schlotterbeck.
