Chelsea set for windfall as Guehi transfer clause revealed

On the move: Marc Guehi

Chelsea Football Newsletter

Guehi began his career in Chelsea’s famed academy, graduating to the first team in 2019.

He made two first-team appearances - both in the Carabao Cup - before leaving the club to join Crystal Palace in 2021.

The Eagles secured the then 21-year-old’s services for just £20m, handing him a five-year deal.

But Chelsea sweetened the deal with two key clauses, one guaranteeing right of first refusal ahead of any future transfer, and the other securing a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

The Blues never employed the former, but the latter will come into play after it was revealed Guehi was close to a move to Manchester City.

The centre-back’s Crystal Palace contract expires in the summer and he had been expected to leave the club then on a free transfer, but City moved quickly to complete a deal this month and pip their rivals to the post.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner all but confirmed the deal as he spoke to the press on Friday, saying: “The deal with Marc is in the final stages. We can’t confirm, but it is not done.”

Standard Sport understands the fee is set at £20m, with a five-and-a-half year contract on the table.

As such, Chelsea’s sell-on clause dictates they will receive around £4m of the transfer fee.

The deal further cements Chelsea’s reputation as one of the Premier League’s most astute selling clubs. They raised close to £300m with the sales of various squad players last summer, making considerable profit on many of them.

At face value, £4m may seem like a drop in the ocean for the Blues, whose squad is reported by Transfermarkt.com to be worth over £1bn, but any income will help to improve the club’s PSR standing.
