Declan Rice's cousin joins Championship club for promotion push

Declan Rice's cousin, Finley Munroe, is ready for a Premier League push this season after making a huge transfer.

Munroe spent the campaign so far on loan in League Two with Swindon Town, but now he's arrived in the Championship.

The 20-year-old, who is a first cousin of Arsenal and England star Rice, has joined Middlesbrough on a permanent deal.

He has left Aston Villa to sign for Boro for a reported fee of around £300,000 after being recalled from his loan in the fourth tier.

And with Kim Hellberg's side sitting second in the Championship, Munroe is going to have his sights set on promotion.

The full-back came through Chelsea's youth set-up, just like his cousin Rice, before moving on to Aston Villa in 2021 and signing his first professional contract at the club in 2022.

He made his Premier League debut three years later and also picked up an appearance in the UEFA Conference League.

A loan to the Spanish third tier with Real Union then followed, before he returned to England and secured another move.

Munroe signed for Swindon last summer, making 23 league appearances this season, scoring two goals and assisting seven.

He also picked up another two assists playing in the EFL Trophy.

Following his star performances at left-back or left wing-back, he was then recalled from his loan by Villa, with him having hugely helped second-placed Swindon in their push for promotion.

And after his recall, Middlesbrough swooped in, trusting his ability and bringing him to the Championship to play at a higher level.

What has Munroe said?

Speaking after signing for Middlesbrough permanently, Munroe said: “I’m really happy to be here.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family and I can’t wait to get started.

“The size of the club speaks for itself. It’s a huge club with aspirations of getting back into the Premier League and that attracted me, as did the fanbase and everything about it.

“I’m excited to get going.”

Munroe also posted a long message to Swindon fans after leaving, with cousin Rice replying in the comments.

Writing on Instagram alongside a clapping emoji and a love heart, Rice said: "Unreal mate! onto the next chapter."

Munroe's debut

Munroe will be hoping to follow the same career trajectory as his £105m midfielder family member.

And to do so, he'll have to get off to a strong start in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

He may get his first minutes with Boro on Friday night, as they take on West Brom at The Hawthorns, hoping to move within three points of top-of-the-table Coventry City.

The game will be live on talkSPORT 2, with commentary coming from Nigel Adderley and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk.
