Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi will be earning around £300,000 a week when he completes his move to Manchester City, according to journalist Alex Crook.
Liverpool supporters were hoping that the England international would make the switch to Anfield instead, but after hearing about his eye-watering wages, the reaction on X was much more understanding:
Now I know why we didn’t sign him… what a joke,

Bullet dodged then 300k for him is just embarrassing.

Fair enough Liverpool I was too harsh on you, 300K for Guehi is hella crazy and overrated

Guehi would have been the club’s third-highest earner
The Reds’ top three highest salaries are Mo Salah (£400,000 a week), Virgil van Dijk (£350,000 a week) and Alexander Isak (£280,000 a week).
Guehi would have slotted in above Isak, which does demonstrate why the club would have been hesitant about pursuing him in January.
While the defender did agree personal terms with the Merseysiders back in September before the transfer collapsed, his wage demands were likely considerably lower then.
The fact that Guehi was set to leave Palace on a free transfer at the end of the season meant he could ask for more from interested clubs, and it appears City were willing to give him what he wanted, even though they have secured his services in January.
Where does this leave Liverpool?
The Athletic journalist David Ornstein had already said earlier this week that Arne Slot’s side would wait until the summer to make their move for another centre-half:
“The feeling I get is that they are keeping their powder dry in the market for the summer, and at that point the focus will be on a central defender.”
Guehi’s impending move to City means that stance is even less likely to change now.
