Chelsea submit bid for Liverpool target

Premier League champions Liverpool look set for a quiet January transfer window despite serious injuries to Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

Early indications from Anfield suggest the club are reluctant to spend again after last summer’s record £450m outlay, unless an opportunistic move for a long-term target arises, as was previously the case with Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo.

One such target, Marc Guehi, now appears bound for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side have agreed a deal with Crystal Palace worth around £20m for the England centre-back, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Arne Slot’s had previously agreed a £35m deal for Guehi on deadline day in September, only for the Eagles to pull out. City’s current defensive injury crisis has accelerated their move, with Palace opting to cash in rather than lose the 25-year-old for nothing.

Liverpool are among several Premier League clubs tracking Sheffield Wednesday teenager Yisa Alao. The Reds submitted a mid-level six-figure bid for the 17-year-old left-back in December, with Manchester United also making an offer.

Chelsea have since joined the race and submitted a bid to sign Alao, according to The Sheffield Star. Alao, who made his first senior start in the FA Cup last weekend, is highly rated, though Wednesday are keen to keep him and have offered him his first professional contract.

Manager Henrik Pedersen has stressed his desire to retain the defender, who is enjoying his opportunities at Hillsborough despite the club’s ongoing off-field issues.

With Premier League giants such as Liverpool, United and Chelsea all interested, Sheffield Wednesday may be forced to consider what level of offer would be acceptable.

The club have already lost several young talents to top-flight sides this season and will hope, if Alao does move on, to secure a deal that reflects his significant potential.
