FA officially suspend Liverpool goalkeeper for six games

Liverpool face a potential unwanted milestone as they host Burnley at Anfield on Saturday. Having already dropped points at home to Leeds and Sunderland, the Reds could, for the first time in the Premier League era, fail to win any home league games against promoted sides in a season.

Wins have been scarce recently, with three consecutive Premier League draws under Arne Slot since the new year. Liverpool sit two points ahead of Brentford in the race for the final Champions League spot. They returned to winning ways with a 4-1 FA Cup win over Barnsley, extending their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

On a disappointing note, goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe received a six-game ban for using discriminatory language towards a teammate. Reds manager Gareth Taylor confirmed that Borggrafe has accepted a punishment, following an FA investigation that started in September last year.

She has already served five matches. The 25-year-old, who joined Liverpool from SC Freiburg last summer and has made three first-team appearances, was involved in an incident during pre-season training believed to include an allegedly racist remark.

She will miss this weekend’s Women’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against London Bees, the final game of her suspension. Borggrafe is also participating in an FA education programme.

Liverpool followed proper FA protocols by reporting the incident and awaited the investigation’s outcome before the ban was confirmed. “The situation is the situation. The team and the club acted in the appropriate way,” said Taylor on Friday. “We supported the FA.

“It has dragged on a bit, which has been frustrating for everyone involved, particularly Rafaela. We’re happy now that it is completed and happy we have got some details on what it looks like. We all can move on.”
