Former Auburn All-American scores 50 points in NBA G League game

Former Auburn All-American Johni Broome scored 50 points in an NBA Gatorade League game on Friday night.

In the Delaware Blue Coats’ 155-140 victory over the College Park Skyhawks at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia, Broome made 18-of-34 shots, including 5-of-7 3-pointers, and went 5-of-7 at the free-throw line, including four two-point free throws.

The NBA G League has a one free throw rule, with the shot counting one, two or three points, depending on the foul.

Broome also had 17 rebounds, five assists, one steal and two blocked shots on Friday night. He scored 25 points in each half.

A second-round pick in the NBA Draft on June 27, Broome has spent most of his rookie season with the Philadelphia 76ers’ G League affiliate. In 18 games with Delaware entering Friday night’s contest, Broome had averaged 20.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 blocked shots.

Broome has played in seven games with Philadelphia this season, with his most recent NBA appearance on Dec. 23. In 40 minutes on the court, he has 10 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Broome has made 4-of-20 shots with the 76ers.

During the 2024-25 college basketball season, Broome’s accolades included consensus first-team All-American, the SEC Player of the Year Award, the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player Award, The Sporting News National Player of the Year Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award as he helped Auburn reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In his final season at Auburn, Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 blocked shots in 36 games. He led the SEC in rebounds and blocked shots. His 389 rebounds set a school single-season record, and Broome left the Tigers ranked second in rebounds, third in blocked shots and eighth in points in Auburn history.
