Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi - seeing off competition from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal

Manchester City have all-but won the race to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi - barring any late twists in the transfer saga.

Speculation over Guehi’s future has been rumbling on for months. The England international had agreed to join Liverpool in the summer but his deadline day move collapsed as Palace pulled out of a £35m deal with the Reds.

The Eagles captain had signalled his intention to not sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, putting several of Europe’s top clubs on alert as he was set to become available as a free agent this summer.

City’s move is a blow to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal, who were both eyeing him on a free transfer this summer. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich had also expressed an interest.

It was initially reported the deal for Guehi was worth £20m but talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has revealed the add-ons means the deal is worth closer to £30m while Guehi has been offered a huge wage by City.

The defender is only 25 and has his best years ahead of him. It marks another stunning piece of business from City, who quickly moved to sign Antoine Semenyo for £65m this month while they also secured Gianluigi Donnarumma for just £26m in the summer transfer window.

Earlier on Friday, Palace boss Oliver Glasner announced he would be leaving the club at the end of his contract and also confirmed Guehi was closing in on a move to City.

"My latest understanding is that a deal with Marc is in the final stages," said Glasner. "I can't confirm a club, because it's still not done but it's in the final stages.

"The result is that Marc doesn't play tomorrow for us.

"When the players want to move on a deal will happen. It looks like it has happened now.

"Everyone wanted Marc to stay forever. I talked to him, of course, it stays between us. Marc showed it in the summer transfer window, showed it the whole autumn that he was 100 per cent committed to the team and to Crystal Palace.

"I wish him all the best for the rest of his career. He is still at the beginning of his great career. He is a fantastic guy."
