Chelsea are said to be zeroing in on key centre-back targets.
The Blues have plenty of centre-back options, but they lack top-level players in that position, or at least with Levi Colwill out for much of - if not all of - the season.
Chelsea have slipped behind in the top four race, currently four points behind fourth placed Liverpool, and they are going to need to back new boss Liam Rosenior if he is to hit the ground running.
According to Fabrizio Romano, centre-back will be the position the club strengthen, and there is one key name on a three-man shortlist. He reported on X: “Chelsea are in active talks since start of the week to get new centre back in January, important immediate addition. Jeremy Jacquet has been on shortlist since July and remains one of the three names on #CFC list for January. Decision on new CB, soon.”
Who is Jeremy Jacquet?
Jeremy Jacquet is a 20-year-old centre-back currently playing for Rennes in Ligue 1. He is a France under-21 international and one of the country’s best young prospects. Jacquet has only been back with Rennes since last year, when he returned from a loan with Clermont Foot.
He has been a regular this season despite his youth, making 16 league appearances and helping Rennes to the European spots so far.
“My career start is quite original — and I’m proud of it,” Jacquet told the Ligue 1 site of his start in football. When you’re young, the most important thing is to play. That came from me and my family. I didn’t hesitate. It shows I’m confident in myself and ready to make sacrifices to reach my goals.”
He added on his recent growth: “The coach asks me to communicate more, to lead, to add a bit more aggression. I’m working on finding the right balance,” When asked about his idols, Jacquet said: “As a defender, Van Dijk and Konaté. But as a kid, it was Pogba — I wanted to play like him.”
