The Barclays Super League is one of the most competitive women’s football leagues in the world. Clubs battle week in, week out to climb the table, and every point is crucial.
For teams aiming for the top, adding proven goal scorers mid-season can make a huge difference. The January transfer window is the perfect time to strengthen squads and address weak spots.
Liverpool FC Women have been consistent performers in the WSL, but like all teams, they aim to improve their attacking options. Bringing in a striker with experience at the top level can provide a boost not just in goals, but in confidence for the squad.
For supporters, seeing a high-profile addition arrive is always exciting. The new arrival is expected to adapt quickly and help the team turn strong performances into results.
Liverpool have now confirmed the signing of striker Martha Thomas on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. The Scotland international joins Gareth Taylor’s squad until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Thomas brings extensive WSL experience, having previously played for West Ham United and Manchester United before moving to Spurs in 2023. She has also been prolific for her national team, scoring 21 goals in 52 senior appearances since her debut in March 2020.
Thomas spoke to Liverpoolfc.com after joining the Reds at the AXA Melwood Training Centre. “It means a lot. It’s a really exciting time for me and I’m really excited to be here,” she said.
“I think it’s the right fit, right now in my career. Even though it’s a short loan, I’m really looking forward to be here and help this team climb the table where they deserve to be.”
The 29-year-old also highlighted her confidence in Liverpool’s squad: “Results are important and that’s how you get points on the table, but you look at Liverpool’s performances they have put in this season, I feel they have put strong performances in.”
“It’s just about getting over the line and picking up points. I’ve got full faith in this team. I wouldn’t have joined if I didn’t think I could help and I didn’t think it was a successful project going forward.”
Thomas, who will wear the No.31 shirt, began her professional career in France with Le Havre before establishing herself in the WSL.
Her experience and goal-scoring ability make her a valuable addition as Liverpool chase better results in one of the world’s toughest women’s leagues.
