Liverpool at risk of breaking unwanted record against Burnley

The Reds will look to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games on Saturday afternoon.

The Premier League champions return to action in the Premier League as they face Burnley at Anfield.

Their unbeaten run currently sits at 12 games, but six wins and five draws represents the areas of improvement that are still needed for Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool stopped a run of three stalemates with a 4-1 victory over Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup, a result that should give the players some confidence before facing 19th placed Burnley.

If Liverpool were to beat Burnley this afternoon, it would be their first win of 2026 after being held by Arsenal, Fulham and Leeds United since the turn of the year.

The Reds’ record against newly promoted sides hasn’t been good at Anfield after they failed to score against Leeds United in a 0-0 draw, and Sunderland also held the home side to a 1-1 draw.

As a result, if Liverpool fail to win against Burnley, it will mark the first time in Premier League history that the Reds will have failed to win all of their home games against promoted teams in a single season.

The last time that unwanted feat was achieved was during the 1980/81 season.

Despite finishing fifth that season in the top-flight, the Reds still enjoyed a successful season that year, as they won the European Cup for the third time in their history as part of a treble alongside the Charity Shield and League Cup.

It has most definitely been an up and down season for Liverpool so far, but a recent turn in results and performances lean towards the Reds getting the job done against the Clarets this afternoon.
