Sean Dyche gives his thoughts on the strength of Nottingham Forest's squad amid developments over Zinchenko's exit

Oleksandr Zinchenko has amassed just five Premier League appearances in a Forest shirt, and could never easily stake a claim to replace Neco Williams at left-back on a consistent basis.

Since his late season-long loan move from Arsenal in the summer, the 29-year-old has been firmly on the fringes of the plans of all three managers in the Forest dugout this season in the league, but he has still played his part when called upon in cup competitions.

Ola Aina had a lengthy layoff due to a hamstring injury sustained in September on international duty, and Zinchenko had to replace him in the Europa League squad.

That decision has now been reversed since Aina’s return to fitness, which sees Zinchenko no longer able to contribute in Europe should he remain on Trentside, a scenario which seems to be increasingly unlikely.

The deal features no clause for a return part way through the season to Arsenal, so the onus is on Forest to secure a new club for the Ukrainian international.

He will be unable to reunite with his parent club, where he would surely be a regular on the substitutes bench in all competitions anyways.

Dyche said: "We have spoken to the player, made it clear in his situation. He is aware of that so we will see what happens.

"We will see what happens, we are being open with him. He is a thorough professional, and I am sure he will be going forward."

Following a quarter-final exit in the Africa Cup of Nations with holders Ivory Coast at the hands of Egypt, Ibrahim Sangare returns to club duties, giving a significant boost to the Forest ranks.

Dyche hopes the midfielder can, "come back in the form that he left us in because it was very good", after being involved in all three goals in the win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Dyche stressed that, "there’s a good competitive element in the squad so he comes back knowing you’ve got to compete for your place and that’s what we want."

Nottingham Forest certainly assembled a strong group of players to facilitate this competition with assistance from their summer incomings.

Perhaps, they indulged in excess as players like James McAtee and the now loanee striker Arnaud Kalimuendo struggled to earn minutes.

Dyche said the club remain open to pursuing deals this winter, particularly in the striker department, with Chris Wood out of action.

This requirement has been largely intensified given their position in the league and lack of goals, despite their seven-point buffer to stragglers West Ham United, who they did crucially manage to beat.

"The obvious one is the striking area because we're a bit short there. The club felt that it was a really good deal for Kalimuendo to go out. We are looking at various options to bring in, so that's the obvious one that jumps off the page.

"You've got to be ready for the shift in sands. It's an unusual market or slightly different market in the January window than it is in the summer, so we've got to be proactive where we can be and reactive if things change."
