Liverpool 1-1 Burnley: Wirtz scores but Reds fail to beat another promoted team

Liverpool have failed to beat any of this season’s three promoted sides at Anfield, with a 1-1 draw to Burnley on Saturday sealing that unwanted record.

Team news: 6 changes for top-four test

After utilising his squad for the FA Cup win over Barnsley on Monday night, Arne Slot made six changes for the return to the Premier League.

With Man United overtaking them into fourth ahead of kickoff after their 2-0 victory over Man City, the pressure was on Liverpool to respond.

It was almost a perfect start for a bright and energetic Liverpool, with Curtis Jones denied a tap-in by Lucas Pires’ vital intervention after brilliant work from Kerkez driving into the box.

The tempo slowed as the Reds found their passing groove, almost completely in control, though promising moves often died down as they were frustrated by another low block.

Wirtz continued to pull the strings and, with Kerkez providing the distracting run, the No. 7 found Ekitike in space to draw a save from Martin Dubravka from outside the area.

Liverpool were handed their big chance when the once-linked Florentino Luis brought down Cody Gakpo in the box, but Dominik Szoboszlai conspired to blast his penalty off the crossbar.

Long-range efforts continued to test Dubravka who held up to the task, but the goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Wirtz‘s powerful strike just before half-time, the German making it four goals in his last six games.

What is Arne Slot telling them at half-time?

Burnley came out attacking more after the break and Ibrahima Konate almost scored at the wrong end after the visitors broke, his desperate block kept out by a sharp Alisson save.

They were rewarded soon after, though, with a simple ball through allowing Marcus Edwards to peel off the hapless Konate and fire in with his left foot.

Chants of ‘attack attack attack’ rang out with 15 minutes left to play and Liverpool thought they had regained the lead when Ekitike picked up a loose ball and hammered in, but the striker was caught offside.

Slot made a triple substitution including Mac Allister taking the place of Gravenberch, and the No. 10 should have scored with his first touch but missed the target woefully.

Seven minutes of stoppage time and the introduction of Chiesa gave hope to those inside Anfield, but they spent much of that time in their own half as the game fizzled out to a draw.

A point puts Liverpool back into the top four at Man United‘s expense, but this 12-game unbeaten run is far from convincing. The Reds were booed off at Anfield and Slot will face mounting pressure.
