Wirtz strikes again, but Szoboszlai penalty miss Leaves Liverpool frustrated in 1-1 draw

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool started the game aggressively, controlling possession. Jeremie Frimpong created their first chance, swinging a cross into the penalty area, which Dominik Szoboszlai headed wide.

Hugo Ekitike came close to giving Liverpool the lead, rifling a shot from range, which was saved by Martin Dubravka.

The Reds were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute after Florentino brought down Cody Gakpo, but Szoboszlai could not convert, striking the woodwork.

Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock before halftime through Florian Wirtz, who smashed the ball home, netting for the second consecutive game for the Reds.

Moments after the restart, Marcus Edwards missed the chance to restore parity for Burnley, blasting his effort wide and high.

Liverpool then began to ramp up the pressure but it was the visitors that looked more like scoring.

Edwards drew Burnley level after running onto a through ball from Florentino and finishing into the far corner.

Ekitike thought he had restored Liverpool’s lead, slamming the ball home, but his effort was ruled out.

Substitute Alexis McAllister let another Liverpool chance go begging, receiving a pass from Frimpong, only to fail to hit the target.

Liverpool pushed for a late winning goal, but Burnley held on to secure a 1-1 draw.

Despite the draw, the defending champions still sit fourth in the Premier League standings, one point clear of Manchester United, who beat Manchester City early on.
