Chelsea look set to reinforce the defense this January transfer window, but of course in classic Clearlake style, we’re going to do it with promising potential rather than proven experience. Marc Guéhi for £20m? Don’t be silly. Here’s some random under-21 from France instead!
That’s no slight on said random under-21 from France of course. Jérémy Jacquet may be the second coming of Marcel Desailly … eventually. But right now, he’s just a tall and lanky 20-year-old center back who has a grand total of one season of top flight experience, with 29 games under his belt. He’s been the starting center back for Stade Rennais for the past 12 months, earning solid reviews for his ability on and off the ball, and in the air.
And now, according to reports, Chelsea have agreed personal terms with the France U21 international, and are continuing talks with his current team over a fee. I’ve seen numbers as high as €50m, which surely would be outrageous (even if Stade Rennais are supposedly looking to fleece us for even more than that, like €70m).
