Arne Slot keeps making a mistake at Liverpool that is genuinely impossible to defend - opinion

After another disappointing result against Burnley, the spotlight has to be shone on Arne Slot for a bad habit that keeps hurting Liverpool.

No point mincing words. It was a stinking Liverpool display against Burnley.

It’s more dropped points against a promoted side, and yet another example of the Reds starting strong and fading into, well, whatever that second half at Anfield was.

The players need to be held to account, but it’s a repeat of a mistake that Slot keeps making time and again this season — something he excelled at in his debut campaign.

Arne Slot’s in-game decisions not helping Liverpool

There have been games recently where Slot has made no substitutions.

That wasn’t the case against Burnley. He made three changes that you couldn’t really take issue with. You could certainly question the timing, though.

Despite Liverpool getting worse and worse as the second half wore on, Slot didn’t use his bench until the 78th minute, bringing on Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson, and Rio Ngumoha.

The latter actually looked impressive in his brief cameo, and the most likely to find a way through a Burnley defence that had the handbrake up at this point.

It’s fair to say the changes made a positive impact on the side, and should have been made far sooner.

It’s becoming a trend with Slot, and while he might fall back on the injuries excuse when making limited subs, it doesn’t excuse the timeliness factor. Even bringing on those three ten minutes sooner could have made all the difference.

It’s going to get tense for Arne Slot at Liverpool

There’s a clear divide in the fanbase right now.

Many Liverpool fans want Slot gone and replaced with someone like Xabi Alonso, while others want to give him the season to try and turn things around.

One thing’s for sure. This display at home to 19th-placed Burnley won’t be winning anyone over.

Retaining the Premier League title seems like a distant dream, but there are other things to play for this season.

Slot could right the ship in time for the business end of the season, but too many more performances like this, and he may not be given that chance.
