Liverpool have acted decisively in the January transfer window. With the Women’s Super League becoming increasingly competitive, the Reds know that every signing counts.
Top clubs in the league, like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, have consistently strengthened their squads, raising the level of competition.
For Liverpool, adding experienced talent is crucial to keep pace and push for better results this season.
The WSL is a fast-paced league where physicality, tactical awareness, and leadership are key.
Clubs like North Carolina Courage in the United States’ NWSL have shown the value of combining experience with youth.
Liverpool are aware that bringing in players with leadership qualities and international experience can have an immediate impact.
Now, Liverpool have confirmed their latest signing: Republic of Ireland international Denise O’Sullivan, subject to international clearance.
The 31-year-old midfielder joins the Reds from North Carolina Courage, where she spent eight-and-a-half years.
During her time there, O’Sullivan won the NWSL Championship twice and lifted the NWSL Shield three times in her first three seasons.
She also helped secure the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2022 and 2023 and was appointed club captain ahead of the 2023 season.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, O’Sullivan said, “It means a lot. It’s a very proud moment for myself and also for my family, who are now only a 40-minute flight away.”
She added, “Liverpool is a massive club and I think when you join a club as big as Liverpool it comes with massive responsibility and I can’t wait to get to work and to give 100 per cent every day.”
Reflecting on her goals at Liverpool, she stated, “I want to help this team and it’s important to get results and that’s what I’m here for, to have an impact.”
“I want to come in and have an impact from the first minute and get going with the team.”
O’Sullivan emphasized her leadership role, saying, “I am a natural leader, I want to lead by example and lead with humility as well, bring everyone up around me and that’s what I’m here to do.”
O’Sullivan has a long history in women’s football, including stints with Cork City, Peamount United, Glasgow City, Houston Dash, and a loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL.
She is the second-most-capped player in Ireland’s history and played in their first Women’s World Cup finals in 2023.
Liverpool fans can now look forward to her experience, leadership, and midfield presence helping the Reds compete in one of the strongest women’s leagues in Europe.
