Chelsea are now said to be pursuing a second January transfer after reports of an agreement with a new defender.

Chelsea are reportedly set to add another player to their ranks even if they are successful in bringing Jeremy Jacquet to the club. The Blues were not expected to have a busy January transfer window, given they spent the summer window being particularly careful with their finances following a UEFA fine.

The Blues effectively had a one out, one in policy, ensuring they sold players before investing in incomings. But following the arrival of Liam Rosenior, it seems as though the Chelsea chiefs have been convinced to they need to strengthen the squad.

The finer details of that deal will still need to play out, but in the meantime, there are reports that Chelsea have decided they will go after a second player. According to The Sun, Cole Palmer’s injury issues and the departure of Facundo Buonanotte, who ended his loan spell early and joined Leeds United amid a lack of game time, has left the Blues seeking a new attacking midfielder.

It is an area where Chelsea need more depth, with Palmer having struggled for fitness all season. The England international, who is arguably the most incisive player Chelsea have, has been in and out, with the club taking a cautious approach in order to avoid injury amid a niggling groin injury.

Joao Pedro has often filled the role, but he is arguably better in either a more advanced role or out wide. Just who Chelsea will pursue remains to be seen, but the Blues are reportedly open to a deal, and should they be able to shift unwanted players like Axel Disasi, Raheem Sterling and David Datro Fofana, they should be able to pull it off financially, providing it’s not a blockbuster fee.

What Rosenior has said about incomings

Speaking this week about potential incomings, new Chelsea boss Rosenior has said: “I think if we do [make signings in January] it needs to be the right player. We need to be patient. I want to assess this group. It's really, really important to me.

"We still have time. We have conversations every day, myself and the board, about potential transfers, both out and in. But at the same time, I need to focus on the players in the building. If I feel it's the right time or the right player, then we'll make that decision."
