The two future faces of the NBA delivered a phenomenal scoring battle and takeover on Saturday evening.
Saturday night was an absolute banger for the entire NBA simply because of the major battle between Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama.
Minnesota Timberwolves / Schedule
The two future faces of the NBA locked horns in the San Antonio Spurs' 126-123 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Edwards delivered a sensational performance after a two-game absence with a career-high 55 points and nine triples, but it was Wembanyama who secured the last laugh with 39 points and nine rebounds.
Both young superstars went back and forth in the crunch time. Edwards went off with 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull the T-Wolves back in the game after being down by as many as 25, yet Wembanyama saved the Spurs after hitting a clutch jumper in the final minute and a critical free throw.
Right in his postgame presser, despite the tough losing effort, Edwards simply expressed satisfaction about his showdown with Wembanyama.
"I love it," he said, "I wish we could've just moved everybody out of the way, just take that one. Me vs. him."
As he was asked who would win between him and Wemby in a potential one-on-one play, the Minnesota sensation kept it straightforward in his answer: "Me."
Unfortunately, Edwards and Wembanyama won't meet this regular season again as the Timberwolves and the Spurs have officially completed their three-game season series.
But who knows? Their paths may cross again in the NBA Playoffs. Either way, these two players are bound to conquer the league and battle it out for years to come.
"It’s an honor, and it’s one of the best things to have the best players go as hard as they can, because first of all, it makes us better," Wembanyama said about his special duel with Edwards. "It makes me better, and it’s a show of respect."
