Chelsea want to bring in central defender

Chelsea want to bring in a central defender before the January transfer window opens.

The news will come as an ironic surprise to former boss Enzo Maresca, whose calls to sign a replacement once Levi Colwill got injured, were ignored by the club hierarchy, and was one of the reasons for the eventual rift.

They missed out on Dean Huijsen in the summer, and even made an initial enquiry about Virgil van Dijk, when he was still discussing a new contract with Liverpool.

In Colwill’s absence, they decided to place faith in their existing defenders, with Trevoh Chalobah given regular game time, and Josh Acheampong backed to succeed at Stamford Bridge. Jorrel Hato was signed from Ajax, and with Wesley Fofana fit again, plus Tosin and Benoît Badiashile, they decided they had enough.

However, the arrival of Liam Rosenior has prompted a rethink, with Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi an option.

Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet and Como’s Jacobo Ramon.
