Liam Rosenior so ‘proud’ of Chelsea duo who barely trained before Brentford win

Chelsea pleased their new manager Liam Rosenior on Saturday after beating Brentford 2-0.

Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer both scored to give Rosenior his first Premier League win as Chelsea boss.

After the west London derby, Rosenior lauded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, hailing his performance as “outstanding”.

However, the Spaniard was not the only Chelsea player to earn praise from Rosenior.

Rosenior has also talked up Palmer and Reece James, who were barely involved in training in the build-up to the Brentford game after just recovering from injuries.

Speaking in his post-match press conference via Chelsea’s official club website, Rosenior said: “I couldn’t play them against Arsenal and I’m so proud of them because they put themselves up [to play today] and they ran themselves into the ground.

“They’ve had no training time with the knocks they picked up, but they showed a fantastic attitude. And the more games and the more training sessions they get, the better they’ll perform.”

In the end, it was a really good afternoon for both Palmer and James. The former managed to get his name on the scoresheet, while the latter helped his backline earn a clean sheet.

James captained the Chelsea side and continues to show why he has the armband.

After Palmer’s penalty, James instructed Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana to go and celebrate the goal with the rest of the team after the two central defenders tried to stay back.

Cole Palmer produces sensational moment during west London derby

Before his spot-kick, there was one passage of play where Palmer absolutely destroyed Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk with a terrific bit of skill.

The move was so good that Stamford Bridge gave Palmer a standing ovation. At times during the win against Keith Andrews’ side, Palmer looked back to his best.

It has been a difficult season for the attacking midfielder because of injuries. His goal on Saturday was only his fourth in the Premier League.

Palmer still has his quality, though, and showed that against Yarmolyuk and his Brentford teammates. The England international now just needs to find some rhythm again, and when he does, Chelsea should go up another level.

Champions League qualification is going to be difficult but not impossible with players like Palmer and James around.
