Virgil van Dijk plans second Liverpool meeting of the season

Liverpool fell to another disappointing home draw yesterday.

The Anfield crowd weren’t happy at all with the performance they saw from the players against Burnley.

The Clarets arrived on Merseyside in 19th place in the Premier League table, but they went head-to-head with Liverpool and didn’t seem relegation threatened at all.

Despite multiple chances for Liverpool to finish the game off, they were unable to do so and Florian Wirtz’s strike being the only goal scored for the home side left them vulnerable to an equaliser.

In the 65th minute Burnley did equalise through Marcus Edwards and with the wind knocked out of Liverpool’s sails, they were unable to respond and slumped to another draw at home to a side they should be beating.

It led to Liverpool being unable to win at home against any of the newly promoted sides in a single season for the first time in Premier League history, and the first time since the 1980/81 season.

Despite this, Arne Slot retains the backing of Fenway Sports Group and they do not plan to change manager mid-season like Manchester United and Chelsea have done in recent weeks.

Now, Virgil van Dijk is set to hold his second team meeting of the season on Monday to address the issues that threaten to derail their Champions League qualification.

Speaking post-match, he said:

“I’m frustrated that after sixty minutes we started to become sloppy and it’s not the first time.”

“It’s been spoken about already, but we have to address it again apparently and Monday will be a big one for it because Wednesday will be a very difficult game over there not only because of the atmosphere but it’s against a De Zerbi team who make it very difficult for you.”

“It’s not about me addressing it, it is about how can we solve it because we all want to win games and we had plenty of chances to do so.”

The result brought boos from large parts of Anfield, and the Liverpool captain has revealed what he thinks about that.

“I don’t like boos from my own fans. I don’t look at the rest. We have to just look at ourselves and if we play like we did – even by creating chances in the last half an hour of today – then it will be difficult, so we have to improve ourselves rather than looking at the others.”
