Chelsea may be set to compete for one of the most highly-rated wonderkids in English football

Chelsea have made a largely positive start to life under Liam Rosenior as the new Blues head coach gets accustomed to life in west London following his big move from BlueCo sister club Strasbourg.

The January transfer window is in full flow and as ever, Chelsea remain at the centre of much transfer speculation, particularly when young players ready to be developed for the future are concerned. One such name has emerged, amidst a reported transfer battle with another Premier League rival.

Chelsea and Man City compete for Jeremy Monga

According to reports coming from Fichajes in Spain, Chelsea and Manchester City are said to be ‘competing’ for the signing of Leicester City’s 16-year-old wonderkid Jeremy Monga, with both clubs hoping to ‘get ahead’ in the race for the young winger.

The Premier League giants are said to be preparing a bid of €25million (£21m) for the teenager, said to be ‘one of the great talents in English football’. Chelsea are showing a ‘strategic approach’ in what could be a ‘silent battle’ for the player, with neither of the Blues or City believed to be rushing into a move.

The player is said to be ‘comfortable’ at Championship outfit Leicester and is in no rush to leave so as not to hinder his development. Monga made a ‘historic’ debut for the Foxes last season as he became the second-youngest Premier League debutant in history, at 15 years and 271 days. Following Leicester’s relegation, he has featured 20 times in all competitions and bagged one goal and one assist in 772 minutes of action. He has also made seven appearances for England’s Under-19 side.

These reports reflect, however, that Monga is highly thought of by some of the biggest clubs in England and may be targeted for a big-money move in the future, even if it is not immediate as he will not sign a professional deal with the Foxes until his 17th birthday later this year.

Leicester boss Cifuentes after Monga’s record-breaking first goal

Monga became the youngest goalscorer in Championship history when he netted his first goal for Leicester in their 2-1 defeat away at Preston North End back in August 2025.

Boss Marti Cifuentes told BBC Radio Leicester after the full-time whistle: "He deserves the credit, he is a talented boy and we are trying to take care of him because he is very humble and that is very important for me because the way he works on the pitch is excellent.

"He wants to learn, he is eager to improve and he has a lot of talent so I'm happy that he scored his first goal and I'm sure he's going to stay humble as well and I'm not happy only about the goal but the whole performance. He is showing character and personality and we're going to try to help him to be the player we think he can be."
