Sky Sports: Liverpool "interested" in signing "generational" £100m star, Wirtz will love him -…

It's been another weekend to forget for Liverpool.

Arne Slot came into their Premier League match against relegation-threatened Burnley off the back of an impressive draw away to Arsenal and an FA Cup victory over Barnsley.

However, despite taking the lead through summer signing Florian Wirtz, the hosts ended up conceding and settling for just a point in a game which really should have delivered them all three.

Fortunately, it's not all doom and gloom at the moment; if reports are to be believed, Liverpool may have just gotten a boost in their pursuit of an attacker who'd surely be a dream signing for Wirtz.

Liverpool target dream Wirtz teammate

To say that Wirtz has had a tough start to life with Liverpool would be quite the understatement.

Fortunately, things have started to go his way in recent weeks, as while the team around him continues to be inconsistent, he has now scored four goals and provided one assist in the six games since Christmas Day.

Therefore, it would make perfect sense for the club to go out and sign someone who'd be a dream teammate for the German, someone who'd hopefully get more out of him.

The good news is that it is precisely what they appear intent on doing.

At least that is according to Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg, who has claimed that Liverpool are still very much "interested" in Yan Diomande.

In fact, he has confirmed that in an interview with Sky Sports Germany, Red Bull Group managing director Oliver Mintzlaff stated that, in relation to the player and other top talents, RB Leipzig "have to generate revenue."

A potential price tag is not reported in the report, but other stories from earlier this month claim that the German outfit could demand up to as much as £100m.

It would therefore require a huge financial outlay from Liverpool to get this deal done, but given Diomande's immense talent and potential, it looks like he'd be worth it, especially as Wirtz would love playing alongside him.

Why Diomande would be a dream for Wirtz

Now, the unfortunate thing for Slot is that while Wirtz appears to be playing himself into some good form, the same cannot be said of Liverpool's other attackers, bar Hugo Ekitike.

So, to get the most out of the German international, the club need to pair him up with an exciting and dangerous attacker, which is what Diomande appears to be.

For example, despite still being just 19 years old, the "generational talent," as dubbed by journalist Bence Bocsák, has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 18 appearances this season, totalling 1161 minutes.

That comes out to a really quite sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.63 games, or every 105.54 minutes.

For comparison's sake, Cody Gakpo, who is now 26 years old, has scored six goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances this season, totalling 1900 minutes.

That comes out to a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.7 games, or every 190 minutes.

In other words, the Leipzig star is someone who'd clearly be able to boost Wirtz's assist and goal tallies.

If that is still not enough to convince you that the winger is destined to be a superstar, perhaps his incredible underlying numbers are.

According to FBref, he ranks in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe's top five leagues for successful take-ons, progressive carrying distance, and ball recoveries; the top 3% for non-penalty goals and interceptions; the top 5% for goal-creating actions and more.

In other words, the teenager is already undeniably elite at both the attacking and defensive sides of being a modern winger and could therefore help the German midfielder in both areas.

Ultimately, while he won't come cheap, Liverpool should be doing all they can to sign Diomande this year, as not only would he be a great player for them in his own right, but he'd also be great for Wirtz.
