Liverpool transfer news and rumours: Federico Chiesa future, sobering Marc Guehi claim and more

Day 18 of the January transfer window was fairly quiet around Liverpool.

Still reeling from Saturday’s draw, excitement wasn’t on the menu.

With each passing day, it looks less and less likely that any big signings will be coming to Anfield this month, but there are a couple of transfer tales to run through all the same.

Federico Chiesa increasingly likely to stay at Liverpool

Despite reports of Chiesa being the sole target for Juventus, news from Turin has flipped that notion on its head.

Juventus have begun talks with Jean Philippe Mateta, and Atalanta’s Daniel Maldini is thought to be higher on their list now than the out-of-favour Liverpool man — the main reason being Chiesa’s wages, which are far higher than those of the younger winger.

Liverpool’s silence on the buying front at this stage in the window doesn’t point to a move happening, so it’s better for Arne Slot to have Chiesa as a fringe option than to send him to Italy with no replacement.

It’s looking like he’ll be staying.

Liverpool labelled ‘not as attractive’ as Man City amid Marc Guehi snub

The topic of Marc Guehi is growing tiresome. The Crystal Palace captain has signed for Pep Guardiola for £20 million, on a weekly wage well above what Liverpool were willing to pay.

Paul Joyce said the reason Guehi didn’t wait until the summer is that Liverpool have lost transfer appeal with this season’s form.

Something made him pick Man City, but surely not viewing the current title holders as a sinking ship?

Regardless, it’s done now and Liverpool can move onto other targets.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig’s chairman admitted that a Yan Diomande sale can’t be ruled out, though that would be a summer move. Another centre-back target, Jeremy Jacquet, is inching towards an agreement with Chelsea.
