Arne Slot and Tottenham look set for collision course as Liverpool line up summer change - opinion

Arne Slot appears to be living on borrowed time at Liverpool after seeing fans turn against him and his team on Saturday.

Having sat through turgid performance after turgid performance, supporters finally snapped following the Reds’ dismal 1-1 draw against Burnley.

Boos rang out around Anfield, which served as a clear message to Slot: supporters are far from happy. Unless something drastically changes, chances are that he will not survive this slump.

The Dutchman’s job security took an almighty hit last week when news arrived that former Liverpool favourite Xabi Alonso had been sacked by Real Madrid. The Spaniard’s availability coupled with Slot’s failure to inspire his team to perform better make a change feel inevitable.

However, anyone hoping for an immediate switch is set to be left disappointed. The latest reports suggest Alonso is keen to wait until the summer before jumping back into management, meaning Slot is likely to see out the season with Liverpool. From there, all bets are off, and while Reds fans hope to see their former No. 14 return, Slot himself should be eyeing goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur with great interest, too.

Arne Slot could be the ideal next Tottenham manager

Some will argue that it is not right to hawk a current Liverpool manager around while he is still in a job. But such is the feeling of resignation over Slot’s departure, it feels appropriate to look at what he could do next.

One year before he joined Liverpool, the former Feyenoord boss turned down the chance to manage Tottenham, but with Thomas Frank on the brink of the sack, things could now come full circle.

Sitting 14th in the Premier League table and having just lost a home match against relegation-threatened West Ham, Spurs’ situation is far worse than Liverpool’s. Slot may see out the season at Anfield, but chances are that Frank will not do the same in North London.

If they are clever, though, Tottenham will appoint an interim manager and take a longer-term view of what could become available over the summer.

As poor as Slot’s Liverpool have been this season, he is still a Premier League-winning manager who Spurs would be lucky to have. If they hold on just a few short months, they could finally get their man, with the Reds in turn getting theirs. Everybody wins.

Surely Arne Slot is living on borrowed time, when will Liverpool pull the trigger?

Slot would make Tottenham a force again

Slot may yet surprise everybody and turn things around dramatically at Liverpool and if his second season ends in a Champions League win, for example, then maybe he will stay in the job.

But assuming that he does not do enough and he does leave the Reds, his status as a top head coach should not be diminished.

Liverpool’s dogged style may have turned his own supporters off him, but Slot is likely to retain the admiration of just about every top club in Europe.

Having said that, the truly biggest jobs will surely be out of his reach if he leaves Liverpool, making a club like Tottenham the perfect next step.

At a low ebb themselves, Spurs could bring Slot in at the ideal time, allowing him to build his own team with the pressure relatively off. From there, you would be a fool to bet against him making Tottenham a force once again. Plenty needs to happen for this to fall into place, but given they tried to get him once before, Slot and Spurs appear to be on an unavoidable collision course.
