Curtis Jones contract priority emerges as Tottenham interest revealed

Curtis Jones is into the final 18 months of his contract at Liverpool and agreeing a new deal will become a priority. Tottenham are already credited with an interest.

Jones has cemented himself as a first-choice starter as Liverpool find themselves in a 12-game unbeaten run, with the Scouser starting nine of the last 10.

He has helped set the tone in a packed midfield and his combinations with Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike have been particularly impressive.

That makes his contract situation more alarming, with the 24-year-old now into the final 18 months of his current deal.

The Times‘ Paul Joyce mentioned Tottenham‘s historic interest in Jones in a wider report on another summer of transition to come on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether the London club are still exploring a possible move for Liverpool’s No. 17, though the recent signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid may provide an answer to that question.

Jones would clearly prefer to stay at his boyhood club, but Joyce floated the debate over whether he would “feel it is time to be more of a guaranteed starter somewhere [else].”

This is his sixth season as a regular in the Liverpool side, starting 128 of his 206 first-team games so far, though he has only played the full 90 minutes in 52 of those.

Last term, and his first under Arne Slot, saw Jones set a new personal record for appearances in a single campaign with 46 – and he could feasibly break that this season if the Reds progress in the Champions League.

Suggestions of a move to Tottenham will hardly be taken seriously, but reports of their interest do at least highlight the need to tie him down to a new long-term contract.

Curtis Jones: ‘I want to be Liverpool captain’

Liverpool have approached the representatives of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister over extensions, but less has been reported when it comes to Jones.

Speaking to Sky Sports last month, the England international spoke of his desire to emulate Steven Gerrard and captain the club.

“Well I think that the biggest thing is that I still have to have the humble way about myself and I don’t want to say, ‘yeah, na, I’m gonna be captain’ or anything like that,” Jones said.

“But I want to be captain of the team. I want to stay here for all my life like the man who I look up to, as everybody knows is Gerrard.”
