Liverpool look set to miss out on another centre-back signing following the latest Marc Guehi news

Liverpool look increasingly likely to be hit with another significant transfer blow this window as a second defensive target is now nearing a deal with a rival club.

The club has reportedly agreed a £20 million deal with Crystal Palace to bring Guehi to the Etihad this window. His contract is due to expire in the summer but the Eagles have been open to an early sale, to ensure they get something for his departure.

Liverpool may well need to return to the drawing board as they also look set to miss out on another centre-back target this month.

Liverpool to miss out on another centre-back signing

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have ‘agreed terms’ with Liverpool target Jeremy Jacquet. The Rennes star is the ‘clear, main target’ for the Blues this window and things are headed in a positive direction regarding his move to England.

Romano has reported that the contract is ready for Jacquet to sign and talks are ‘ongoing’ with Rennes, who are seeking a club record sale for the 20-year-old’s signature. The Ligue 1 side are reportedly asking for around €65 million (£56m) to sign off on a transfer but Chelsea’s current bid is said to be lower than this figure.

Liverpool’s link with Jacquet emerged last week as they expanded their search for a new centre-back beyond Guehi. However, the France U21 international has had multiple clubs chasing him, including Arsenal and Chelsea. The Reds’ interest pre-dates the transfer window opening but their rivals are making the move for him.

Marc Guehi closing in on Man City transfer

Despite coming close to joining Liverpool last summer, Guehi has had a change of heart regarding his future. The Reds had agreed terms with the centre-back and were set to finalise his medical on Deadline Day, until Crystal Palace pulled out of talks in the final hours.

More recent reports suggested Anfield was still the favoured destination for Guehi but now, the destination looks to be Man City instead. Transfer expert Romano also reported that Guehi has ‘completed the first part of his medical’ with City and a deal is set to be signed. All parties are now entering ‘formal steps’ towards finalising the £20 million transfer.

Speaking on the pending deal, Pep Guardiola said: “I don't know yet officially from my club. When I think you will know it, I will know when they tell me. Apparently it's close.”
