Marseille are currently in 16h place in the table, while Liverpool are a little higher up in 9th. However, with just three points separating these teams, this game is definitely a high-stakes one.

Marseille and Liverpool have faced off on numerous occasions in the past in Europe, although this match will be their first clash for well over a decade, with their last clash being in 2008. Liverpool have beaten Marseille in their last three meetings, last losing at the Stade Velodrome in 2004.
Marseille will come into this game on the back of a thumping 2-5 win over Angers at the weekend, a victory that has elevated them into 3rd place in Ligue 1. Despite a loss to Nantes on January 4th, Marseille have now scored 14 goals in 2026 alone thanks to a huge 0-9 win over minnows Bayeux in the Coupe de France.
Liverpool extended their current unbeaten run to 12 matches this weekend, but it's fair to say that their draw with strugglers Burnley was not impressive. In fact, Arne Slot's side have only won six of those 12 games, and have only won once - over League One side Barnsley - in their last five.
In Europe, Marseille have been largely erratic. They have picked up some big wins - particularly at home - over Ajax and Newcastle, but also suffered a poor home loss to Atalanta, as well as a defeat to Sporting CP. Moreover, they've struggled in front of goal, only scoring 11 in Europe, which is a surprise considering their potency in Ligue 1, where they are top scorers.
Liverpool have also suffered from inconsistency in the Champions League this season. They have produced some sublime performances, most notably thumping Frankfurt 1-5 and beating Real Madrid. However, their 1-4 loss to PSV Eindhoven was appalling and their defeat to Galatasaray not much better.

This is a tough game to call, primarily because both teams are capable of tremendous attacking performances at their best, but if they're not "on", as such, they can also struggle.
Right now, though, it seems like the goals have dried up for Liverpool. They stuttered badly at the weekend against Burnley, and have not won away since beating Tottenham on December 20th.
Marseille, meanwhile, have been free-scoring for two weekends on the bounce, but their loss to Nantes prior to that was probably worse than anything Liverpool have served up recently.
Overall, we should probably expect an exciting game here thanks to the vulnerability of both teams, but the prediction is a draw.
