Former Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has officially completed his transfer to Manchester City in a stunning £20 million deal, with the England international set to bolster Pep Guardiola’s injury-hit defensive ranks.
The 25-year-old centre-back has penned a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium bringing an end to his four-and-a-half-year spell at Selhurst Park and dealing a significant blow to Liverpool, who came agonisingly close to securing his signature last summer.
Manchester City have now capitalised on Liverpool’s misfortune, securing Guehi for significantly less than the Reds were prepared to pay six months ago. The £20 million fee represents exceptional value for a Premier League-proven international defender, with Palace forced to accept a reduced price due to Guehi’s contract expiring in June 2026.
The Cityzens have already invested heavily this January, securing Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £62.5 million. With Guehi’s arrival, Manchester City’s January spending now totals approximately £85 million as they chase silverware.
Speaking on the move, Guehi said:
“First and foremost, it’s such an honour, such a big club to come and play for,” he began.
“For me, I have always just been obsessed with getting better and wanting to improve and that’s something I am constantly striving for and this is the perfect place for me to do that.I have heard so much about the club and the fans, the players speak for themselves, the manager.”
“It’s definitely the right environment for me to improve and just get better. Hopefully I can bring what I have to the table to help every single person here too.”
On City’s success over the last decade, Guehi added:
“[It’s been] Absolute domination to be honest and it’s been great to see where the club has come from,” he said. “The growth and continued growth which the club wants to go for and strive for which is amazing.”
“I am someone who just wants to come in and help and do his part and see how far the club can continue to grow.”
Since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in July 2021 for £18 million, Guehi has made 139 Premier League appearances and established himself as one of England’s most reliable defenders, earning 26 senior caps for the Three Lions. His performances at Euro 2024 were particularly impressive, with the defender starting every match for England en-route to the final.
