Celtic-linked Evan Ferguson looks set to stay at Roma this month after being given another vote of confidence at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Republic of Ireland international arrived in the Italian capital in loan switch from Brighton last summer but has scored just five times in 21 matches - two of which came against the Hoops in a 3-0 Europa League victory during Wilfried Nancy's ill-fated tenure in the dugout back in November. Ferguson has missed Roma's last two games with injury and in his absence, January signing Donyell Malen - a loan signing from Aston Villa - marked his debut by scoring in the 2-0 win over Torino on Sunday.

As well as Celtic, Ferguson has also been touted with a move to Serie A title champions Napoli, who are on the lookout for another striker with Lorenzo Lucca poised to join Nottingham Forest on loan.

But prior to kick-off in Turin, Roma sporting director Frederic Massara appeared to rule out the prospect of Ferguson's loan being cut short, adding that the team are counting on him to improve his goal tally once he is fit again. Speaking to Sky Italy, he said: "Evan Ferguson leaving? Ferguson has been showing off all his qualities lately, it's a shame he's injured now, but we hope to have him back soon. We're counting on it."

After the game, Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini added: He's (Ferguson) grown since the beginning, the important thing now is for him to grow in terms of motivation, to understand that Roma is a great opportunity for him."

Interim Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is desperate for attacking reinforcements with just two weeks of the January transfer window remaining.

Celts are once again said to be keen on Chelsea frontman David Datro Fofana, who has been recalled from a loan spell with Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey with the London club hoping to sell him on a permanent deal this month. English Championship side Derby County have also been heavily linked with the player.

The Premiership champions have also reportedly made a loan offer for Lorient striker Mohamed Bamba. The Ivorian's exit from the Ligue 1 team and reports in France claim that he is part of a bomb squad of players that Lorient are looking to offload before the transfer deadline.
