Liverpool could be snubbed of another centre-back target after Marc Guehi signed for Man City
Liverpool have been hit with a significant transfer blow as leading defensive target Marc Guehi has signed for rivals Manchester City.
The England international is now off the table, having opted to join Pep Guardiola’s side despite agreeing terms with Liverpool less than five months ago. Multiple reports suggested Guehi was still Anfield-bound but City have beat the competition and secured his signature for £20 million.
This sends Arne Slot and co back to the drawing board but another target could also quickly be snatched out of reach.
Liverpool could be denied move for Jeremy Jacquet
Liverpool are eager to strengthen their defensive line, with Ibrahima Konate approaching the end of his contract and Joe Gomez’s future also uncertain.
Jeremy Jacquet is another name the Reds are considering but they may be snubbed of his signature too, and by another Premier League rival no less. According to RMC Sport, Chelsea are ‘making a strong push’ to sign Jacquet but they need to hash out talks over his transfer fee.
The defender’s club, Stade Rennais, are reportedly demanding in excess of €60 million (£52m), as Jacquet is regarded as a ‘young and highly talented defender’. Discussions between Chelsea and Rennes are ongoing and focused on his valuation, as his contract does not expire until 2029.
Chelsea have reportedly indicated they are ‘prepared’ to offer €50 million (£43m) to sign Jacquet but that figure may require a revisit.
Rennes putting up tough fight for Liverpool target
Fabrizio Romano also provided an update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Liverpool target Jacquet. The Blues have ‘agreed personal terms’ with the 20-year-old. The Rennes star is the ‘clear, main target’ for them this window and things are headed in a positive direction regarding his move to England.
Romano has reported that the contract is ready for Jacquet to sign and talks are ‘ongoing’ with the French club.
Rennes manager Habib Beye recently explained that any interest shown in Rennes players will need to come with a significant offer in order to convince him and the club.
“We are very calm. I'm telling you. To come and get a player from Stade Rennais, you will have to be very persuasive in your desire to have these players and in your financial willingness. We value these players and they are very important to us," Beye said in a recent press conference.
